Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontics combines orthodontic treatment with jaw surgery (also called orthognathic surgery). This collaborative process involves orthodontists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons working together to improve both function and aesthetics. The goal is to enhance the overall facial appearance, bite, and smile.

When Is Surgical Orthodontics Typically Done?

Surgical orthodontics is generally recommended in the following situations:

  • Severe Jaw Discrepancies: When the position, shape, or relationship of the jaws is too severe for orthodontic treatment alone to correct, or when attempting correction without surgery would lead to unwanted side effects.
  • Facial Aesthetic Enhancements: To address facial irregularities caused by abnormal jaw shape, alignment, or position, improving overall appearance.
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnoea: To manage sleep apnoea when jaw irregularities contribute to airway obstruction.

What to Expect

Surgical orthodontics is a step-by-step process tailored to your specific needs. Here’s an outline of the usual process:

  • Orthodontic Preparation: Braces or aligners are used before surgery to align the teeth and prepare the bite for surgical correction.
  • Jaw Surgery: Performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, this procedure repositions the jaws to achieve the desired alignment and function.
  • Post-Surgical Care: Orthodontic treatment continues after surgery to fine-tune the bite and ensure optimal results.

Our team will guide you through every step of the journey, ensuring you feel informed and supported.
